Car-puccino – The Car That Runs on Coffee

Car-puccino is an interesting project developed by the team from BBC1’s “Bang Goes the Theory” science program.

It sounds like an interesting concept that might drastically change the way we look at fuel, but in reality, this coffee-powered vehicle isn’t cost-effective at all. The appropriately named car-puccino was created using a 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco, chosen for its resemblance to the legendary DeLorean, used in “Back to the Future”.

Car-puccino will make a 210 mile journey, from Manchester to London, powered only by coffee. Very dry coffee will be placed in the cylinder at the back, heated at 700 degrees Celsius, until it breaks down into hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The gas is then transported to the engine, where it burns, pushing the vehicle along.

You can’t teach an old pony new tricks

This hybrid-eco-electric frenzy has swallowed up every carmaker segments from hatchbacks to sports car to big trucks. I know it’s a trend, I know y’all try to save the planet, but leave the hell alone the legends! Electric Mustang? I bet my cell-phone would have better battery autonomy. So what should I do? Stop at every 100 miles and wait for 2-3 hours to recharge it? Hybrid Ferrari? Get real, people! You can’t teach an old dog pony new tricks! Muscle cars, sports cars…these automatically trigger the idea of gasoline-powered peppery engines, not environment-friendly-5-year-old girly cars. I could imagine Schumacher queing at a race to “fill up” his runner. (more…)

Another hybrid-fever victim: Acura

Future seems pretty predictable: we WILL drive electric and hybrid cars and WILL stay in line at street corners with a point in our hands to charge our little zero-emissions friend like a cell phone.

Big brands have lined up with this trend and have thrown into this cruel world various proppeling combinations with tiny batteries that can develop up to 600hp. (more…)

The young and the restless: Toyota Sports Hybrid Concept

Yes, it is young, as GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept has just been unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon. And yes, it is very restless, as the Japanese Speedy Gonzales is motivated by almost 400HP.

GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing Master of Nurburgring. The two-seat, AWD hybrid is based on the outgoing MR2 platform. Under the skin,  there is a mid-mounted 3.3-liter V6 that drives the rear wheels and which is partnered with Toyota’s THSII hybrid system, that propels the fronts. Drivers can optate for the EV mode in the city and enjoy this 1500kg beauty reach 60mph in just 4.5 seconds.

Toyota Motors Co. say this Honda CR-Z’s rival will hopefully go on sale starting 2011 and that it intends to be world’s first sports hybrid car and as we know Toyota staff, it’s very likely they stay true to their promise.
