Volvo: “Stick your PC in out headrests!”

volvo xc70

I know I’m not the only one to wonder what smashers could the carmakers put on their concept cars to impress. And I’m not talking about extra-terrestial bodies or almost-zero emissions on a 5.0 guzzler Mustang. It’s about all the pretty stuff, latest technology, sat-nav, many GBs of music, wireless or self-parking “goodies” that make a car have a personality.

Latest egregious piece of folly comes from Volvo. The recent Chinese ID owner revealed “the industry’s first Internet connected Rear Seat Entertainment System with Windows XP, WiFi and a 500G hard drive.”

Officially, it remains a test-bed study for the moment, but the idea is that you can do everything on a rear headrest touchscreen that you can do on your home computer. You can also plug your computer into the car and load the XC70’s system with your own music and video to keep things quiet in the back row. While it’s officially only in the ‘conceptual phase,’ we have it on very good authority that the system will be available in 2011 Volvo XC60 and XC70 models beginning this summer.

What’s next? We will be able to cook dinner on the way home from work, do some gym, have our nails and hair done and clean the house on the push of a button. Oooh, it sounds indecently teasing!

Press release after the jump!

UK to receive Volvo DRIVe S80 V70

Volvo prepares two sweet surprises for the UK, named DRIVe S80 sedan and V70 wagon with the impressive “119 g/km CO2 emmissions” tag. This makes the S80 and V70 the first premium executive cars to emit less than 120 g/km CO2. More importantly to buyers, that sub 120 g/km CO2 rating means both models fall into the Vehicle Excise Duty Band C category, resulting in a low road tax.

The DRIVe variants of the S80 and V70 are motivated by Volvo’s 1.6L turbocharged diesel engine, developing 109 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, at 52mpg. Like all of Volvo’s DRIVe models, the DRIVe versions of the S80 and V70 will be available in SE, SE Premium, SE Lux and SE Lux Premium trim levels.

2011 Volvo S60: the video

Volvo S60

When I think of Volvo, I immediately associate the name with reliability, comfort, luxe, safety. Now that I’ve seen the S60 video, “desirability”strongly comes to my mind. 2011 Volvo S60 looks pretty much as the concept presented last year, a gorgeous luxury sedan that breaths Volvo values through its every pore. Volvo will learn Chinese

Seems the cash situation at Ford is so bad, that they have to sell Volvo to the Chinese…for $1.8b. I personally don’t know which is the worst part: having it sold for a sum almost 6 times smaller than the one for which it has been purchased in 1999 or the fact that the Swedish brand will go into the hands of  LCD-wireless-tech-addicted Chinese. Don’t get me wrong, these things are good on a car, but what will come of Volvo when the bikes riders will fill it with cheap plastics and cloth made on ships by low-cost hands. WHAT? (more…)
