World record set by Romanian Dacia: Duster is the cheapest SUV on market!

With a lot of help from its parent company, the Renault-Nissan Alliance, Romania’s low-cost Dacia brand is picking up the pace with the launch of its sixth model, the Duster that was officially presented at the Geneva Motor Show this week.

The compact off-roader uses the firm’s low-cost Logan platform that has spawned several car and small-van models over the past few years. At 4.31 meters long and 1.82 meters wide, the generic but somewhat tough-looking Duster is similar in size to the recently facelifted Nissan Qashqai crossover.

Dacia says that the Duster can comfortably seat up to five adults offering both front and rear occupants the same amount of space as the Logan saloon while the SUV’s boot has a capacity of up to 475 liters (depending on version). (more…)

Second generation Porsche Cayenne

Second generation Porsche Cayenne

Just a few days before the official unveiling from Geneva, Porsche had to reveal the press release, as pics and rumours have been hovering the net.

Porsche has put Cayenne to a weight-loss programme, for example the Cayenne S gets its weight down by 180kg over the outgoing model. The Cayenne platform’s wheelbase has been extended by 40mm and on the overall, the body is 48mm longer than the outgoing car. The range starts with the 3.6 liter V6 model, the cheapest entry into Cayenne ownership. Power has been upped to 300 horses, and while mated to the 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission, fuel consumption is down by 20% to 9.9 liters per 100km.

The model that spearheads the new range is apparently the Hybrid version, which is no slouch as it gets an “S” in its name. The Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid features a 333 horsepower supercharged V6 engine paired with a 34kW (47hp) electric motor. The car can run on electric power only at speeds of up to 60km/h and while cruising, the combustion engine may stay off and the car may just glide along until a maximum speed of 156km/h. (more…)

Nissan has officially announced the presence of an updated Pathfinder at Geneva Auto Show.

The new SUV features a revised front fascia complete with a new hood, redesigned grille, updated headlights and new bumper. V6-powered models receive new badging as well as side molding. New-design 16, 17 and 18-inch wheels are also part of the Pathfinder redesign. Overall, the new Pathfinder grows 80mm.

The Pathfinder’s interior has also been given the once over, focusing heavily on improved quality and more content. The new Pathfinder features all-new door trims, revised switchgear and dials, chrome accents and new seat fabrics. What items remain have been upgraded with higher-quality materials.

A Speed Limiter is now standard on all Pathfinder models, with ESP, rear-view camera and touch-screen navigation all optional.

The Euro-spec Pathfinder offers two diesel engine options, but we expect the Nissan SUV to soldier on in the U.S. with a standard 4.0L V6 and an optional 5.6L V8.

The Hero Comes Back: 2011 Nissan Patrol

2011 nissan patrol

The reliable off-roader comes back with an upgraded body and a roomier interior, ready to compete with Toyota Land Cruiser. Nissan’s 50-something-year-old biggest SUV  is powered by a 5.6-litre V8 engine with VVEL (variable valve event and lift) and DIG (direct injection gasoline), which generate 400hp and 550Nm of torque.

The four-wheel independent suspension, hydraulic brakes, hill start assist or hill descent control make it almost unbreakable, status which was confirmed by the many tests it has been put to. It’s been driven through desert, on rocky surfaces, highways and inner-city traffic. “By the time we came around to adding the new body and interior, we had virtually completed our reliability and durability testing and perfected all of the new technologies”, says chief vehicle engineer, Takashi Fukui. It has been upgraded both to the exterior and to the interior, by offering more space for the second row passengers, generous amounts of leather and high quality materials.

2011 Volkswagen Touareg

2011 Volkswagen Touareg

Unveiled a couple of weeks earlier than Geneva Motor Show, Touareg doesn’t catch your attention at the first sight, as there aren’t many changes to its exterior dimensions. What is obvious is the more sculpted sides and latest VW trend for the horizontal lines to the face that was adopted for 2011 Touareg, too.

Like any revived model, there had to be some figures modified, too. And there are: fuel efficiency was improoved by the redesign and weight reduction – the new base Touareg is now nearly 460 pounds lighter than its predecessor. Of course, there have been made some engine tweaks, too. (more…)

Belgian Designer Envisions a Lamborghini SUV

Lamborghini has never had anything in common with SUVs, not yet anyway, but that hasn’t stopped Belgian designer David Cardoso from imagining what a Lamborghini SUV would look like.

He came up with the Conquisto, a futuristic concept that combines the aesthetic look of Lamborghini with the bulky traits of an SUV. It’s a two-door, rear-engine vehicle, but these details don’t really matter since it will most likely remain just a very original concept.

I personally find the Lamborghini Conquisto very unnatural, but that’s probably just because I can’t imagine Lamborghini as an SUV. The Porsche Cayenne has been on the market a while now, but although most find it irresistible, I just think it’s weird looking.
