Mazda 5 with smiley face to make Mazda lineup a big happy family

As Mazda replaces its range with the polarizing “smiley face” look model by model, a day will come when one will have to not consider the brand at all if he/she doesn’t “get” the design language. The latest model to cross the bridge is the new Mazda 5 MPV launched at Geneva.

The standout aesthetic feature are those lines that flow along the 5’s profile, the first full application of the brand’s Nagare Flow design language previewed by its recent concept cars. The said lines combine with Mazda’s signature sculpted wheelarches and the curvy front end to create a cohesive look and a good Cd value of 0.30. Rear pillar metal have been deleted and the previous car’s high mounted tail lamps are ditched for conventionally placed items that go better with the new image. The 5’s segment unique dual sliding doors are of course retained. The overall look is very busy – either you like it or you don’t.

Inside, the 5’s cockpit follows the theme set by the current 3, but is less funky for this application. Seating for up to seven are available, including the occasional “Karakuri” seat, as per the old car, but comfort is improved via new seat designs.

The new 5 debuts alongside a new engine – the MZR 2.0 DISI (direct injection spark ignition) with “i-stop” start stop tech producing 148 bhp and 191 Nm of torque. This compares well to the current car’s 136 bhp/175 Nm, with 15% less CO2 emissions to boot. Paired to a six-speed manual with eco optimised gear ratios, its fuel consumption of 14.5 km/l is better than the 13.9 km/l of the MZR 1.8 engine with 113 bhp/165 Nm. Both engines come with single-nano tech catalyst and are Euro 5 compliant.

Mazda says that the 5, which was not bad to drive at all, is even better now thanks to increased spring rates and lighter stabilizers that improve straight line stability and makes body roll more linear. Rubber couplings added to the steering shaft and more rigid components provides a more linear steering feel while noise insulation is said to be improved.

Latest Mazda 2 shows off the interior

2011 mazda2 interior

Though expected to be revealed this week at Chicago, Mazda presented its upgraded Mazda2 interior at Canadian International Auto Show, which is quite normal, as the Japanese carmaker has a larger market share in North America than it does in the US.

The new Mazda2 features some interesting modifications, such as higher quality seat fabric (with piping) along with a better audio system and more robust HVAC controls. It’s not sure if the changes will be present in the European models, but the alterations should help give the Mazda2 a fighting chance against competitors like its platform-mate, the Ford Fiesta, as well as the next-generation Chevrolet Aveo and models already on sale like the Hyundai Accent, Nissan Versa and Honda Fit.

MX-5 celebrates 20th anniversary with a limited edition

Mazda MX-5 20th birthday limited edition

Yeah, I know. It seems all that the carmakers are doing recently is aggressive tuning, hybrids and limited editions. We have the Infiniti Limited Edition, hybrid Acura and even a concept hybrid Ferrari.

As Shelby celebrated its birthday with an unexplainable-highly priced limited edition, Mazda joins the club and celebrates MX-5 20th anniversary with a limited edition. Limited just by name and by number of units, ’cause there are extremely few tweaks the world’s most pupolar roadster has suffered. (more…)

Smiling car, flowing desing: Mazda 5

The Japanese car manufacturer has thought of ways to make your day: be it a fuel-efficient engine, smart gadgets, wireless toys etc. But this is what ALL car manufacturers can do with their cars, so it won’t prepossess anybody. But as we know the little rice-eaters, not even another atomic bomb would stop them, so they made a…smiley car. Yes, Mazda 5 will grin at 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. (more…)

The King is Dead, Long Live the King!

King RX-8 seems to be getting old and Mazda have been thinking of replacing it…and they’re doing it the ZOOM-ZOOM way, with not one, but two new models! One of them is a new RX-7, with a version of the Renesis 16X 250 hp rotary engine, which can easily achieve 350 BHP. Another good part is (more…)

Mazda MX-5 – A rainbow of white

Mazda MX-5,called the Niseko, debuted last week at the Leipzig Motor Show.It gets a striking bodykit as standard impresses with it’s variety of whites.

The Niseko is named after the most prestigious ski resort in Japan, and will also be available in the UK – although the European model’s bodykit is a cost option here. British buyers get Icy Blue paintwork and dark brown leather seats.

At the Leipzig Motor Show also debuted the Citroen C5 Estate, Lancia Delta and Toyota IQ city car.

Organisers clearly had an eye on the environment, as large areas of the expo were devoted to vehicles powered by alternative fuels – such as Porsche’s hybrid Cayenne and the Efficient Dynamics BMW X6.

The new, improved Mazda RX-8

The RX-8 has been one of Mazda’s most appreciated models, getting great feedback from the Japanese manufacturer’s clients and numerous awards, including some “car of the year”. With the new generation Mazda proves it can do better.

Powered by the same, revolutionary rotary engine, the new RX-8 is as impressive as its predecessor, RENESIS can go up to an amazing 9000rpm, whilst being around 60% smaller than a similarly powered V6 engine. You’ll be able to choose between the 232hp model, with a six-speed manual transmission, or the 212hp, six-speed automatic transmission model, with shifting paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

Fans of the RX-8 will be very pleased with its new look, because Mazda has decided not to change a whole lot. The front and rear bumpers have been slightly restyled, the front and rear headlights have been replaced by new ones, sporting the LED technology, and the exhausts are noticeably larger (90mm in diameter). The line of the car remains unchanged however.

The new RX-8 proves that a sports-car can be very aggressive and comfortable at the same time, thanks to its innovative rear door hinges, which makes getting in and out of the back seats a breeze.

Judging by what we’ve seen so far, Mazda has another hit on its hands. (more…)
