Europe will receive 2011 Kia Optima with 2.0-liter Gasoline and 1.7-liter Turbo Diesel

During last week’s press days of the 2010 New York International Auto Show, Kia took the veils off the all-new 2011 Optima mid-size sedan that will carry the same name in all markets outside Korea.

While the new Optima will arrive in Kia’s U.S. showrooms this fall, European buyers will have to wait until Spring of 2011 to get their hands on the Korean firm’s D-segment sedan that will compete with the likes of the Ford Mondeo and Citroen C5.

For Western Europe, the new front-wheel drive Optima will be available with a choice of 2.0-litre CVVL gasoline and 1.7-litre VGT turbo-diesel engines, with output and performance numbers to be released at a later date.

In Russia and some Eastern European markets, Kia will also offer the new Optima with a 2.4-litre MPI gasoline engine producing 178-horsepower.

Oddly enough, Kia’s initial plans for Europe do not include the firm’s new 2.0-liter turbocharged unit with 278-horsepower that will be offered in the U.S. along with a 203HP 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection.

Depending on the model, European customers will have the choice of a six speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission featuring Kia’s “Sport-matic” clutchless manual shifting or fully automatic operation. (more…)

New York 2010: Kia Forte lineup comes with five-door hatch

Since Americans seem to be finally latching onto the concept of the compact five-door hatchback, Kia is jumping into the fight with a new variant of the Forte. The five-door Forte debuts with a slightly revised front fascia (something that will make its way onto all Forte models) to go with its new more useful backside.

Under the hood the Forte five-door retains the same port-injected 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter inline-four engines found in the sedan and Koup. Those engines remain paired with six-speed transmissions of the manual or automatic flavors. Inside, a new center console can be equipped with a navigation system for the first time, push-button start is available and the automatic versions get paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Look for the Forte five-door to hit Kia dealers in the coming months.

New York 2010 Preview: 2011 Kia Optima

Next generation Kia Optima front

The next stage of Kia’s transformation from design also-ran to serious contender will kick off at the New York Auto Show in few weeks. After launching the Forte sedan and Koup, the new Sorento and, most recently, the Sportage, Kia’s new design language is being applied to the Optima. The all-new 2011 Kia Optima is longer, wider and lower than the car it replaces although we don’t know by how much. While it’s not as aggressive as the sketches released a few weeks ago, this Optima is certainly a huge step forward.

Next generation Kia Optima side
We don’t have any mechanical details yet, but we’d guess that the Optima shares a lot under the skin with the new Hyundai Sonata. Nor would we be at all surprised to learn that the Optima won’t have a V6 engine option this time around. Instead, it’ll probably use the same direct-injected 2.4-liter inline-four found in the Sonata. The turbocharged and hybrid variants may follow as well.

2011 Kia Optima

Next generation Kia Optima Magentis

New Kia Optima – or Magentis – will make its debut at New York Auto Show on April 2nd.

Based on the design sketch, we can see that Kia has ditched the distinctly three-box, uninspiring looks of the current car for a sleeker and sexier design. Of course, the actual car will be toned down from this, but we expect a looker based on Kia’s recent track record. The Korean brand promises “bold, athletic and sporty visual energy” for its D-segment challenger.

Little else is known for now, but Kia has revealed that the new Optima is longer, lower and wider than the car it replaces, and features a “significantly longer wheelbase”. Hopefully, they will keep the good looks and we won’t have a shock when the official unveiling will take place. ‘Cuase this is usually what happens: teaser photos look …teasing, but the actual car lacks a lot of the teasing parts.

Kia Ray – a ray of light

Kia Ray Concept

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: most electric or hybrid cars have funny looks, are two-seaters or have incredibly tiny back space. One all-electric car that impressed me at all aforementioned categories is Leaf. No it’t time for Kia’a Ray to show us (me and others that find electric/hybrid cars wacky looking) that low-emission cars CAN be fun looking at. I say nothing about driving experience yet…

Kia Sportage 2011 at Geneva

North American Kia Sportage side

The third generation Sportage will come only for North America, with new design lines and hopefully new driving experience that would place the compact crossover at a higher level in the segment.

Kia haven’t released any details about the new model, waiting for Geneva to present the newest member of the family. The model looks a bit like the new Sorento, being longer, wider and lower and I guess it will keep the 2.4-liter inline-four found in the new Hyundai Tucson when it goes on sale this fall. I can say the US costumers will be a little dissappointed as other markets will get a range of gas and diesel power options from which to choose, but, in the end, the looks and strenght of the crossover will make them go over this aspect.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates cooperates with Hyundai and KIA

Today at Seoul,Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates announced the collaboration with Hyundai and Kia,where the models produced by the two companies will get infotainment systems based on Microsoft Auto software by 2010.

Hyundai and Kia are the first Asian automakers to get systems from Microsoft, but this won’t stop the software company to deal with other automakers. As we already know,Microsoft makes the sync system for Ford.

“There is know exclusivity clause involved here” – Velle Kolde – Microsoft spokesperson.

Microsoft considers that the systems for Hyundai and Kia will be the next version after the one used on Ford and it will be upgradeable.

Kia revealed a new concept : Kia Koup

Kia exposed the new concept at the New York auto show on Thursday morning.

The Koup has a wide stance and flared wheels, fronted by a tabbed grille and slanted LED headlights. The car is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter, direct-injection four-cylinder engine that makes 290 bhp and it has a six-speed automatic gearbox. Kia added continuous damping control for sporty handling.

It won’t take long before the production for Kia Koup will start.

Kia Kee Concept

The all-new Kia Kee sports coupe concept vehicle today made its U.S. debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Previously introduced at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in Germany, the Kee is an expression of the company`s emphasis on design and incorporates styling cues that will establish a design language and identity for the brand.

The Kia Kee (pronounced `key`) is a 4.3-metre long, four-seater, 2-door coupe with svelte, newly proportioned lines resulting from a slightly lengthened greenhouse. It is a new interpretation of a 2+2 coupe with an imposing road presence that demonstrates an uncluttered, pure and timeless execution and represents a new design ethos for Kia.
