Fiat 500 in the spotlight again: Chrysler developing all-electric Fiat 500EV for U.S. market

Fiat 500 Abarth electric side

You read a few days ago about super-fancy Pink droptop 500C. Now Fiat has taken the little bug to the drawing board again and they’ve come up with an all-electric 500. We knew Chrysler was up to something when it showed off an all-electric Fiat 500 at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. Today, the automaker has officially announced that it will engineer and produce the Fiat 500EV for the United States, starting in 2012.

As of this writing, details about the 500EV are slim. We do know that the powerplant will be comprised of three main systems – an advanced lithium-ion battery, high-power electric powertrain module and an EV control unit to manage overall power flow. The 500EV will be developed and engineered at Chrysler’s headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

In more Chrysler EV news, the automaker will be receiving up to $48 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to build a total of 140 Ram plug-in hybrids. Originally, the automaker had plans to bring a Ram hybrid to market, but due to the slow-selling nature of other gasoline-electric pickups, Chrysler’s plans were canned. This new round of electrified trucks will be used in a three-year demonstration project that will aid in expediting the development of vehicle electrification technology. No word on if we’ll see a production version of the Ram PHEV anytime soon, however. In the meantime, buyers hoping for a high-mpg Ram can look forward to a light-duty diesel option currently being considered.

Definition of “GAY”: Fiat 500C Pink edition

Limited edition Fiat 500C Pink drop-top

Personally, I don’t understand what people see in Fiat 500 that is so amaizing. Maybe it has good performance figures…maybe! But definitely looks is not an asset for the little bug. Of course, this is my opinion! I’m a muscle car fan so it’s hard to trick me in for a girlish drop-top hatch.
And as if the classy 500 were not enough, Fiat brought to light 500C Pink Limited Edition. To characterise it in one sentence, it is the ultimate gayish drop-top car! Or a special edition for pampered daughters-of-multi-millionaire-petrol-magnats pricesses. Or it’s just me being mean and envious…

The special color scheme extends to the exterior paint, door mirrors and interior, and is complemented by chrome trim, 16-inch alloys and a smattering of other special touches. As you can see from the press release after the jump, the limited edition commands a £13,500 price tag in the UK’s comparatively price-inflated market (that’s around $20,600 U.S.), representing a £1,200 premium ($1,800) over the 500C 1.2 Pop model upon which it’s based, but it also carries £1,870 ($2,860) worth of options.

I’m eagerly waiting for a special edition pink drop-top Hummer, with flower-shaped headlamps and fluffy plush-covered seats. That would definitely revive H3.

Press release after the jump, trying to explain the need for Gaylord Focker’s car. (if the name doesn’t ring any bells, watch “Meet the parents”, the movie)

Powerpuff Girl: all-electric Atomik 500

While there’s still no word on whether Fiat/Chrysler will bring an electric version of the retro-metro 500 to market, it appears that someone else will. Atomik Cars has taken the 500 Abarth and made it meaner and cleaner. The new company’s aim is to deliver a zero-emission vehicle that blends supercar performance with city car packaging. Atomik’s motto is “Anticipating the future.” It may well have succeeded.

With output from its AC brushless synchronous motors reportedly equivalent to that of a 300 horsepower engine, the Atomik 500 slingshots to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. It has lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries in unknown quantity, a ceramic heating system to warm its passengers and a “Peltier A/C module w/o gas” to cool them. More details will forthcoming as its April debut at Top Marques Monaco draws near, but we can tell you that its rarity is all but guaranteed: only around 50 copies will be available for purchase.

Fiat 500 – O.CT Tuning

The Austrian Tuner O.CT Tuning has worked it`s magic on the new Fiat 500 and turned the cute city car into a performance mini, without sacrificing the likeable appearance.

The results are impressive. Engine performance is enhanced by IPRO. O.CT Tuning first offers power enhancement via OBD, and can be brought in worldwide by the O.CT base partners. The Fiat 500 1,3 16V engine output is raised from 55 kW / 75 hp to 66 kW / 90 hp. Also welcome: the increase in torque from 145 Nm to 180 Nm.
