Car-puccino is an interesting project developed by the team from BBC1’s “Bang Goes the Theory” science program.
It sounds like an interesting concept that might drastically change the way we look at fuel, but in reality, this coffee-powered vehicle isn’t cost-effective at all. The appropriately named car-puccino was created using a 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco, chosen for its resemblance to the legendary DeLorean, used in “Back to the Future”.
Car-puccino will make a 210 mile journey, from Manchester to London, powered only by coffee. Very dry coffee will be placed in the cylinder at the back, heated at 700 degrees Celsius, until it breaks down into hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The gas is then transported to the engine, where it burns, pushing the vehicle along.
Seems interesting enough, but there are a few major downers. First, the team estimates Car-puccino will burn 70 kilos of coffee, during the journey. At a price of between 13 and 26 British pound per kilo (depending on quality and brand), this unusual ride will cost between 910 and 1,820 pounds. Compared to the 36 pound cost in a petrol-powered car, it’s 25 to 50 times more expensive.
Plus, the crew will have to make regular stops, every 60 miles, to clean up the filters of soot and tar. At a top speed of 60 mph, Car-puccino’s journey is estimated to complete in ten hours’ time.

There is one thing wrong with this artical – fails to mention it runs on usee Coffee grounds – not the new stuff.
So its good as free!
That said its totaly impractical 60+KG to get 200 miles is soon going to use up the worlds used coffee mountain
But its just a bit of fun and a good chemestery lession.
That’s true Ed, they are using used coffee grounds, but on a regular basis, you’d need to drink a lot of coffee to always have enough used “fuel”, wouldn’t you agree? But for a one way trip like this, it’s definitely cheaper.
